Virtual plants is a method and technology that is to use computer and visualization technology to simulate the structure of the development and growth process of the plant in the virtual space and shown in the three-dimensional images. It is not only the important part of digital agriculture and intelligent farmers, but also is the important part of agricultural information technology. Therefore, the research on the virtual plants has major theoretical and practical significance.Virtual plants research relates to multi-disciplinary knowledge, such as computer, mathematics, agriculture and ecology as well as its own-complexity, thus there is a large gap between the current research on it and its actual application.For example, the rules of plant growth is difficult to extract, the structure of plant’s organs has a great demand on equipment and its construction process is relatively complex, the modeling method of virtual plants is too old to express the continuity of the plant growth process.As to the limitations and deficiencies of the construction method and existing system, this paper focuses on the construction method and the key technology of virtual plants growth process. The paper, which is based on the fractal theory, introduces binary tree, graphic image and allometry model theory into the constitutive research on the three-dimensional growth process model for virtual plants. Utilizing the methods, the growth rules of branch plants can be extracted and the leaves of the plant can be simulated quickly and vividly. Thus the continuity of the overall growth process of the virtual plants can be shown on the computer screen in a three-dimensional way, which supplies a new thinking and method to research virtual plants.The main work of this paper includes the following aspects:1Extracting the rules of the three-dimensional branching structure of virtual plants. On the basis of binary tree theory, this paper puts forwards quasi binary-tree to simplify the growth rules of branch plants. Combined with the three-dimensional L-system, this paper systematizes and standardizes the extracting rules for the purpose of establishing an intact growth rules of branch plants. 2Creating a database on virtual plant leaves. Combined with graphic image and also by means of extracting the three-dimensional morphological features of plant leaves, this paper comes up with a research method that is to reconstruct the morphological features of plant leaves based on the combination of image and L-system for the purpose of realizing the fast simulation of plant leaves.3Simulating the dynamic three-dimensional growth process of virtual plants. This paper takes advantages of the time control L-system to describe the topology and growth conditions of the continuity of the plants. This paper describes the plant growth relationship between its root and crown based on allometric growth model and plant growth function and constructs three-dimensional structure model of virtual plant on the basis of the time control L-system, all these is to improve the construction rules of virtual plants on the PlantVR platform and achieve simulation.
