Virtual plant is a kind of technology which simulates growing process of plants on computer and show the process with visualize technology. Its research usually focus on plant individual or group and combine computer science with botany, ecology and artificial intelligence. It has potential applications including digital movie, computer game and entertainment, agriculture teaching. It is one of focal point of research in computer science.This paper study the background and research of the virtual plant, anaylsis the growth rule of advanced plant. Present a new approach of growth modeling based on growth function to solve the simulation faithful to botany. This method use virtual organs to depict plant organs, use data acquisition to fit growth function and control the growth process of internode and morphing process, add similar parameters to 3D morphing to simulate the diversity structure of organs.3D graph of visual plant is rendered by 3D engine which reads the attributes of virtual organs to control the rendering process. The main researches and achievements are as follows:①Firstly, this dissertation simply summarizes recent achievements of theory research and visualization platform. Mainly talk out L-System and virtual organ and introduce two technologies of object deformation in computer graphic: Free-Form Deformation and Three-Dimensional Morphing. Mainly talk out interpolation algorithm in 3D Morphing.②Analysis the physiological mechanism of advanced plant, mainly research the growth rule of advanced plant. This dissertation use growth equation as main growth context for the needs of visualization.③Aim at the shortcoming of traditional methods in simulation the inerratic growth of plant, presents a method that use growth function to control growth process of plant, and combine this method with virtual organ to simulates the growth of plant accords with its growth rule.④Analysis the shortcoming of L-System in simulation of organ's structure diversity , aim at the shortcoming of traditional 3D morphing in simulation of diverse growth process, add similar parameters to 3D morphing and combine with virtual plant. Provide organs under different growth conditions, endow each organ with similar paramaters according to environment parameters, diversify the shape and growth process.⑤Use cayenne as experimental material to carry on the simulation, the model has been implemented on the platform PlantLab. Experimental shows that the model can effectively and vividly simulates the growth and development of virtual plant and its deformation.⑥Finally, give the significance and deficiency of the study and the future work.
