With the development of computer technology, virtual reality technology has been widely used in all walks of life. As a kind of virtual reality technology, virtual tree has been commonly used as a virtual scene entertainment in business, education and other industry applications.Research on tree growth attacks more and more attention in modern forestry. Due to the flexible operation and good visibility of virtual tree, it can do virtual experiments on computer to test hypotheses which can not be proved by experiments directly once, or do different training programs on virtual plants, or establish virtual farm, etc. It is virtual plant which can overcome many problems in forestry production such as the research objects in large volume, long physiology cycle, experimental difficulties, vulnerable to environmental impact issues, etc. study of virtual tree used in forestry has attracted attentions of more and more scholars and researchers.Recently researches on virtual tree are mainly about outline of tree which contains trunk shape, leap shape, texture and colour of surface etc. This tree model under a single function can only be used to create realistic trees scenes, but can not dynamically show the growth process of tree. On this basis, the growth physiology of trees will be combined with the tree morphology, physiological and ecological model of virtual trees is to be a new direction of research. The new model may contain changes of tree height and diameter at breast height during tree growth, branching, leaves, and growth condition under environmental factors etc, it can also combine each function models together to form a complete growth model of tree.Thesis work are as follows:(1)The basic structure of tree commonly used L-system model, and has addition of parameter control and random variables, preparing for the addition of physiological processes, the tree is simulated from the perspective of the growth.(2) Physiology of trees is a complex process, it must be expressed by mathematical function, and then used in tree models. Mathematical models of tree growth condition under light and water are summarized in article to form the basis of growth model of tree.(3) It is the change of tree height during tree growth process to be simulated. Data collection of growth increment is difficult as long as growth cycle of tree is long and growth is vulnerable to external environmental factors. To solve this problem, support vector regression combined with genetic algorithm method is used to mathematically modeling the limited growth data, it can avoid errors caused by the equation selected and precision of regression using non-linear regression method commonly.(4) The growth model of tree and simulation platform is build by software Visual C++and OpenGL.The experiment shows that the approach used in article is feasible and can actually simulate the process of growth quantity change of tree growth. It has some value, and lays the foundation for future research.
