Measurement is a means for man to understand nature. With the advances in science and technology, people need to measure and are able to measure more complex parameters, and the amount of measurement data is also fast growing. At this point, it becomes increasingly difficult to effectively express or interpret vast amounts of complex data simply through text or a two-dimensional chart. A metrology-oriented data visualization solution based on advanced information technology and computer graphics technology, instead, is able to visually present various types of measurement data in front of observers and in this way, to take the advantage of human brains in image processing. It will accelerate the process of scientific discovery. As components of measurement data vary largely from field to field, it is required to classify measurement data from the perspective of visualization, determine the corresponding mapping relationship between data and graphics, and to create a common solution applicable to various types of measurement data. In addition, the visualization program needs to have a3-D effect, an immersion effect, and an interaction function to enable better visualization effect and an enhanced perception of observers, which will mainly rely on3D, CAVE as well as virtual reality technology. The author, by integrating the above-mentioned technologies into the basic procedure of data visualization, proposes in this paper a new technical solution for metrology data visualization which is based on3-D modeling, assisted by scene setup, and uses view control as the essential part. The achievements can be summarized as follows:1) A universal measurement data visualization system with an immersion effect, a3-D effect and an interaction function is created, which is the first step in developing a high performance metrology data visualization system.2) With great emphasis attached to versatility, the system is applicable to various types of measurement data and enables a user-friendly operation. It has already been used for such measurements as signal quality, dimensions, electromagnetic field, etc, facilitating the associate scientific research.3) A new method of uncertainty propagation evaluation based on data visualization and numerical analysis is proposed.4) A software for3-D modeling of vector and scalar measurement data is developed.
