Plasma discharge crossatron modulator switch is a new type cold cathodeplasma pulse power discharge device. Based on gas discharge andcross electromagnetic field theory, it achieves the control of pulse current. Asa high-precision and miniaturization switching device, its componentsproduction processes are very strict. Therefore, it is not realistic to studyentirely by experimental. The efficiency of research can be greatly enhancedby numerical simulation methods.Based on the gas discharge theory, we have established and simulated atwo-dimensional and two-fluid drift diffusion model of the switch bymulti-physics simulation software: Comsol Multiphysics4.0. The simulationcontents include:1. Discharge status of the device is controlled by grid. Especially, thedischarge process of pre-ionization phase between source grid and cathodeacts a key role in the normal working of the device. Firstly, the dischargeprocess is simulated on a two-dimensional two-electrode DC discharge model.Then we simulate the influence of electrode spacing in the working process. As a result, the optimal electrode spacing values can be determined.2. Reasonable setting of magnetic field has important influence on deviceworking status. In this paper, we have simulated the magnetic field intensityand the change of magnetic region. After analysis of the effects of themagnetic field to the electron density distribution, the best setting for themagnetic field is then obtained.Series of design, test and experiment are studied on entity device basedon the simulation results of grid and magnetic fields. Structural optimizationof the grid is made according to the experimental results. After testing, theoptimized device performance has been significantly improved.
