As early as after the birth of electronic media, newspaper readers have began to drain. Nowadays, with the continuous development of new media, many young audiences turn to the embrace of new media such as Internet, and gradually lose the habit of reading newspaper. In view of this situation, the United States firstly proposed the method of introducing newspaper into teaching, so as to cultivate teenagers to read the newspaper and train future readers. Subsequently, the newspaper education project was gradually unfolded in the whole world. Its English name is "Newspaper In Education", abbreviated to "NIE". Japan is a country that started the education project earlier in Asia and it is more mature than other countries. In the1980s, after inspecting and confirming the good effect of the newspaper education project, the newspaper industry and educational circles jointly carried out the newspaper education project in Japan in1989, tending to make the youth pay more attention to the text and increasing the influences of newspaper among them.The Japanese Newspapers Association has set up a special" NIE National Committee ", planning the whole promotion activities of member newspapers. It also established an "NIE foundation", providing funds to support schools with this project. The NIE activity patterns are as the following:NIE foundation selects1%of the schools as practice schools, it provides a variety of free newspapers to these schools and the teachers have to start their teaching activities based on these materials. The characteristics of NIE are:all layouts of the newspaper, whatever news pages, photos and advertisements, are teaching contents. Teachers can choose one certain newspaper for teaching, also for a variety of newspapers so as to do comparative reading.Compared with the NIE. in other countries, the Japanese NIE has more characteristics and is a very strong representative among nations who use English as a second language. Through introducing the development process of the Japanese NIE and summarizing its features, reasons for success and the existing problems, the purpose of this paper aims at hoping to draw a general outline of Japanese NIE and put forward some strategies and suggestions to our press and educational circles.
