With the development of fast service protection and restoration mechanism in the ethernet technology area, the Ethernet is finally widely deployed in the telecommunication carrier network. Comparing with the traditional Ethernet protection technology, i.e. the link protection, Spanning Tree Protection, etc., the APS protection mechanism which is under G.8031standard definition proves to have much faster switching time for protection, more stable performance, and more aligned with the international Ethernet protocol standard, i.e. MEF (Metro Ethernet Forum). And because of the above advantage, it is more widely applied to meet the requirement of carrier companies. This article focuses on introducing a feasible implementation solution of APS mechanism under G.8031standard definition. In the beginning, it generally introduces the G.8031protocol. Then, it depicts in large the most important part of the design and implementation in this solution, by deeply analyzing the customer’s requirement, in order to complete the APS protection mechanism. The critical part in this article lies in how to design the SW architecture of this product and the APS functional SW modules, as well as how to communicate messages between APS functional SW modules, in order to reach the function of the sub50ms switching protection for end-to-end line services under any kinds of failures. The purpose of this solution is to commercially apply APS protection feature for end-to-end line service on the Ethernet access products of the certain company, so that these products can be widely deployed in large scale in the Ethernet carrier network.
