In1973, Ethernet was born, in the past few decades, although there have been a variety of technologies to compete with Ethernet, but the Ethernet technology is always fast forward, and some technologies have been disappearing. Now, in the network the carrying business flow of the network interface are mostly Ethernet interface, Ethernet is ubiquitous, and the trend of Ethernet integrating network is more apparent. Ethernet technology has clearly surpassed its initial LAN origins to become an attractive, powerful solution. The appearance of Carrier Ethernet concept is one of the most remarkable to Ethernet technology. Making use of the high efficiency and flexibility of Carrier Ethernet, the network operators can provide high quality of broadband service; at the same time they can greatly reduce the cost of investment and maintenance and increase the revenue, while users can enjoy more kinds and more flexible service with lower cost. However, the reliability of Ethernet has always been the main factor of restricting it in large-scale operation in the telecommunications network.In order to enhance the Ethernet reliability, this thesis analyses the Ethernet OAM insufficient in fault detection mechanism, proposes a token-based protection switching mechanism on the basis of the existing Ethernet protection technology, and respectively designs Ethernet protection scheme in the different topology.First, this thesis introduces the related concepts and basic requirement of Carrier Ethernet.Next, this thesis introduces the reference model of Ethernet protection and the method of fault detection, describes the protection technologies of Ethernet, such as the link aggregation technology, spanning tree protocol, EAPS(Ethernet Automatic Protection Switching), RPR(Resilient Packet Ring), G.8032and G.8031, and analyses their respectively advantages and disadvantages.Then, in view of the insufficient of OAM fault detection mechanism in the existing Ethernet protection technologies and flooding because of MAC address refreshing in the protection process, this thesis proposes a token-based protection switching mechanism, and respectively designs Ethernet protection scheme in the linear, single ring and multiple ring topology.Finally, through OPNET simulation software to simulate the process of token-based protection in the Ethernet under different topology, and the simulation results prove that the token-based protection switching mechanism is the feasibility of the application in Ethernet.
