With the development of society and the improvement of people’s living level, the demands of the communication are diverse.The growth of broadband users are rapid.With the view of business point, voice communication is still the ordinary way of communication by users.The growth rate of traffic is slowing gradually, as a result that the growth rate of operators inmcome is slowing too.The demand of broadband services is growing continuedly, which includes multimedia web browsing,video on demand,IPTV,VOIP,and so on.Broadband services have gradually become the main direction of the operators’ additional revenue.Currently, the backbone network has prepared very well to bear all kinds of broadband services.However, the development of the access network which locates between the communication network and users is relatively slow.The techonlogy of access network has become a bottleneck that restricts the development of communication.Adaptting to the new form and needs, the technology of broadband access needs to improve constantly.From PSTN to ADSL, users needs access speeds faster and faster,bandwidth broader and broader. Now, the industry chain of fiber access has been formed which has been commercialized.The manufacturing capability of who manufacture optical product is improving further.The maturation of technology of fiber access network promotes the diversity of network applications.The ultimate trend of optical access is FTTH, which can give us integrated access services including voice, data and video.In order to meet the sustainable development of broadband services, to meet the users’ demand for high-speed business,to lower the costs of construction, and enhance market competitiveness, the operators should choose optical accsee technology based on XPON technology. GPON has obvious advantages in comparison with other standards of PON. It provides unprecedented high broadband that its downlink rate can acheive to2.488Gb/s and its uplink rate can acheive to1.244Gb/s. Its asymmetric nature can adapt to the market of broadband data services. It supports farther access distance than20km that can save a lot of fiber resources. It can provide QoS Service Assurance. It can carry ATM cells or GEM frame. So it has good service level, and ability to support QoS guarantees and full-service access. And it provides perfect protection mechanism and OAM function. Therefore, GPON is the ideal technology to realize the services of broadband access network and integrated reform.Firstly, we describe the development status and trend of the access network, the concept, features and advantages of PON. And, we make a comparison of the APON/BPON, EPON and GPON to explian at present the necessity of large-scale promotion of GPON. The we give the GPON system, the application model of GPON for different needs and environment, the planning method for GPON system. Aslo, we make further study for the key technology of the mode of GPON system access network, the ODN planning, the maintenance planning, the VLAN&IP address planning, the calculation of optical power and bandwidth. Finally, we give the PON engineering constrution of Chongqing mobile Fuling branch as an example, that we introduce the solutions and implementations of GPON technology in practical engineering.
