Although, from the surface, the chaos have many features likely disordered, non-periodic, random and so on. The generation of chaos signal is a deterministic movement. On the other hand, for these surfaces, the chaos signal be good in the data transfer process to hide up the useful information. Recently, secure communication system based on chaos, has become an important issue. Combined with field programmable gate array (FPGA), we can be better to generate the chaos system, because FPGA have so many advantages. FPGA have the attribute of flexible program to achieve the function that we want to achieve the actual needs, and can be easily transplantation to other FPGA platform. In this paper, we introduced the background, significance and basic features of the secure communication system based on chaos. Moreover, we outlined the design flow about FPGA, and introduced the details of generate the chaos signal by FPGA. Because the synchronization mode plays the important role in the design of the secure communication system based on chaos. We carried out a detailed summary about the synchronization mode. And we completed the pulse synchronization in the chaos systems based on FPGA. On the basis of the preparatory work, we have completed the design of a data transmission system based on the chaos. And the transmission system carray out the FPGA verification. The data transmission system based on the chaos has successfully completed the data encryption and decryption on the platform of FPGA. This system can be easily transplanted to other platforms. We employ the pulse synchronization mode to achieve the exactly synchronized between sending end and receiving end. This mode sent less redundant synchronization information to improve the security of communication system based on the low-dimensional chaos.
