Magnetic flux leakage testing is a very important pipeline non-destructive testingmethod. But pipeline is usually very long in reality. So the amount of the MFL data isvery large at one time. The data must be compressed because of the small space andlimited storage devices in the pipeline. Usually, a lossless compression method is usedin order to analyze and process the data in later. The LZW algorithm is used to compressthe MFL data in this dissertation. In the first, this dissertation introduce some basic knowledge of the MFL and thebasic principles of data compression. Then a MFL data lossless compression systembased on FPGA is designed, this system includes a data acquisition module, a datacache module, a string table storage, maintenance and update module, a LZWcompression module, a output memory module and a clock module. In this system, theinput data cache used an asynchronous FIFO. The dictionary which is the core of thissystem uses a dual-port RAM.In the end is the functional simulation of LZW, this simulation included three parts.First of all is the simulation of short string in order to verify the correctness of the LZWcompression and prove that the redundancy of data is compressed in the datacompression technology. Then is the simulation of an English abstracts and MFL data, the simulation of English abstracts prove that the compression efficiency of an ordinarytext. But through the simulation of the MFL data has found that it has got veryconsiderable compression efficiency. If it is used into the MFL testing field, the storagespace and the economic costs will be greatly saved.
