Experimental teaching of mechanical fundamentals is an important part of teaching inengineering related disciplines. The complete course series is not only an important way forstudents to acquire knowledge, but also plays an important role in the training of the students’comprehensive scientific studying approach, the experiment skills and comprehensiveanalysis capability, the ability of finding and solving problems, and the innovation, businessspirit and practical ability. Virtual Reality (hereinafter referred to as VR) technology is animportant supporting technology to the construction of virtual laboratory. In recent years, VRtechnology has been widely used in mechanical design, assembly, prototyping, andmanufacturing fields. Some universities at home and abroad have established virtuallaboratory. However, due to high demand for the motion simulation of mechanical experimentprocess, there is no systematic virtual laboratory of mechanical fundamentals available yet.In this thesis, the framework of mechanical fundamental virtual laboratory is constructed,some of key technical problems in virtual experiment are further studied, representativeexperiments are selected to realize experimental teaching platform of mechanicalfundamentals based on VR technology, compensating for shortages of the traditionalexperimental teaching preferably. The main contents of this thesis are summarized as follows:(1)The structure system of experimental teaching of mechanical fundamentals is analyzeddeeply, the framework of mechanical fundamental virtual laboratory is constructed accordingto actual teaching demands.(2)The models of mechanical fundamental virtual laboratory are classified, dynamic andstatic modeling and human-computer interaction of virtual hand are analysed and researchedbased on physiological structure of human hand, specific solutions are presented, the mappingrelationship of data glove and virtual hand is established, and human-computer interaction isrealized.(3)Some of key technical problems in virtual experiment are further studied, such ascollision detection, constraint guidance, and corresponding solutions are presented, theintegration technology of software and hardware with virtual laboratory is further researched,and the integration of data glove and tracking device with virtual laboratory is realized. (4)Based on the above-mentioned theoretical works, mechanical fundamental virtuallaboratory system is designed and developed based on EON Studio,3DMAX, EONSDK,5DTSDK and FASTRCK SDK, realistic experimental scene and each function module arerealized. Experimental results are verified based on a double channel3D projection system.Beneficial attempt is made to the web distribution of the virtual laboratory.
