With the rapid development of wireless communication technology, embedded technology and sensor technology, agricultural monitoring is developing towards automation and informatization. The connection between RS485bus and sensors is used in the traditional wired monitoring system. PC monitor is used in the agricultural scene, facing the difficulties of field wiring and equipment installation. As a representative of short-range wireless communication technology, there are many advantages in ZigBee technology, such as low power consumption, low cost, short delay and self-healing ability. In the dissertation wireless sensor network is introduced into agricultural monitoring system and a wireless sensor network’s gateway has been designed for agricultural monitoring. The software and hardware design process of gateway is introduced, as well as the performance test is implemented.The32-bit ARM processor with rich on-chip resources is selected as the system’s microprocessor. The gateway accesses for wireless sensor network, Ethernet and GPRS networks through expanding outside ZigBee module, Ethernet interface chip and GPRS module as well as the external FLASH and efficient power management module are combined, the hardware design of wireless sensor network gateway for agricultural monitoring has been completed.According to the characteristics of agricultural monitoring and actual application needs for gateway, the operating system task partition and design are implemented and ZigBee communication program and FlASH memory system are developed. Finally the paper introduced three means of realization for data transmission between the gateway and the Internet. The software design of wireless sensor network gateway for agricultural monitoring has been completed.The designed Gateway for agricultural monitoring is tested in the end of dissertation. After experimental platform is set up, networking for coordinator and the data transmission performance for gateway are tested. The experimental results show that the designed gateway by the dissertation has achieved better transmission performance and has met the design target with realizing GPRS wireless way and the Ethernet cable free way of switching.
