With the fast development of computer software and hardware, plus the optimization of Ethernet/Internet network infrastructure, embedded wireless gateway device has been widely used and become vital in the area of communications and automatic control. As a result, more attention has been paid to remote control and data transmission of embedded device. Current methods include fiber optic communication and satellite communication. However, they are always subject to high cost and low reliability especially when the data collection stations are located in a distant place where the condition is poor or wired network is not available. In the cases that the data quantity is small, GPRS network is a good choice. This paper proposed a solution based on the current situation.We first described the development trends and significance of mobile IP technology. Then we discussed in detail about the GPRS principle and did more research on Lonworks on the basis of the analysis of the demand of embedded gateway technology. After that, we proposed a GPRS based wireless monitoring gateway which integrated Lonworks interface module and GPRS communication module, enabling Lonworks on-site control network to be connected with public wireless network without using the combination of a gateway converting Lonworks to RS232and GPRS communication module. In this way, Lonworks on-site control network will have less connection with GPRS public wireless network. In implementing this application, we conducted research and design in two parts:The first part is hardware analysis, which includes selection of GPRS wireless communication module, circuit board design, and hardware debugging. The second part is the software part. It focuses on general program design and GPRS communication module software design, including embedded TCP/IP protocol and socket programming and function analysis of sending and receiving SMS.Many laboratory tests and field tests have proved that our wireless monitory gateway can run successfully. The gateway system meets the designed requirements. It successfully transmitted and received remote data, providing remote control system a low cost, wireless data transmission solution. This intelligent wireless gateway has been applied in monitoring area and energy consumption meters, in which it demonstrated it characteristics of high efficiency, real-time, and anti-jamming.
