Fieldbus technology could be summarized as an open, multi-pointcommunications, serial transmission, digital information control system.It fundamentally changed the architecture of conventional automaticcontrol systems. At present, there are dozens kinds of field bustechnologies around the world. PROFIBUS(Process Field Bus) is one ofthe state-of-the-art bus technology, which has a high market share bothin the international and domestic markets. And the most widely usedstandard in PROFIBUS is PROFIBUS-DP.This paper use FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array) to design andachieve the functionality of the DP slave station. First, I studies thePROFIBUS-DP protocol, then I had a in-depth study of FPGA and Veriloghardware description language which is used in the design.Reference to the structure of slave station protocol chip SPC3(SIEMENS PROFIBUS Controller,Version3), combined with the FPGA’s owncharacteristics and the functionality needs to be done with the DP slavestation, this paper presents the overall modular structure of the slavestation. This design of the slave station is divided into three functionalmodules: physical layer module, fieldbus data link layer modules and userlayer module. Then for each module, follow the top-down design ideas,split it into relatively simple submodules.This paper carried out a detailed design on the physical layer module,using Verilog hardware description language in the QuartusⅡ programmingtool to program for baud rate adaptive module, baud rate generator module,UART receiver module, UART transmit module and comprehensive experimental module. Then compile and exclude the syntax error in the program. Afterthat, doing necessary functional simulation on the sub-modules. At last,downloading the program to the development board to do the hardware test.Through the hardware test, we could see that the physical layer modulerealized the function of send and receive packets correctly, and it’llbe able to support the follow-up modules for packet processing andresponse. In addition, the comprehensive experimental module of thephysical layer module also completed the experimental design of packetprocessing. This experimental design is the preparatory work for thedesign of fieldbus data link layer module.
