This paper has raised the possibility of using EPON technology in the construction ofcampus wireless network. It is aimed at the status of the lack of pipeline resources whenmobile operators enter into the traditional area of the existing fixed-line operators and build awireless network. With the increasing advance of optical network terminal to the users, theflexible networking capability of the PON network, the ability of providing high bandwidth,the lower requirements of pipeline resources and good economic applicable ability, EPONtechnology has irreplaceable advantages of building wireless network, concentrating similarusers and utilizing business scene which has large bandwidth demand.WLAN (wireless LAN) is a complement of wired access network and an importantmethod of improving the last mile. The choice of transmission technology of it also hassignificance for the integrity of the network. The basic principle of EPON network is tomake as many terminal devices as possible to share central office equipment, decrease thenetwork nodes, and reduce the maintenance pressure under the certain pipeline limitedconditions. What’s more, compared with traditional SDH or Ethernet, EPON can save a hugenumber of transmission network resources so that it has little effect on the integrity of thenetwork. Meanwhile, the network platform of advanced EPON technology has goodexpansibility and can carry several business needs like voice services and video surveillanceto achieve multi-use of the network.On the basis of passive optical network, this paper analyzed some PON technologiessuch as APON and BPON. In addition, from the technical and economic point of view, it notonly emphasized the superiorities of using the EPON technology but also expanded therange of the EPON. This paper researched and discussed the solution of triple play.In the third, fourth chapter taking Inner Mongolia University as an example, it mainlystudied the use of EPON technology in the construction of colleges and universities WLAN.It also drew up an overall plan and introduced the key technologies; the fifth chapter putforward the conditions of expanding business application based on the EPON network,focused on the lower security of PON network and came up with a protection scheme. Thispaper expatiated on the advantages of EPON technology in detail.With the development of optical fiber access network, FTTB, the popularity ofFTTH,2G,3G, later will be the WLAN and cable access network four network collaborative form to build unified construction scene, PON technology because of its own technologicaladvantages, can provide large bandwidth, high rate, in four the network construction willplay an important role, is the industry recognized as one of the important optical accessnetwork technology.PON technology itself has some shortcomings, such as network star, ONU cannot directcommunication, with the growth in business volume, increased access node room number.But its powerful and widely, such as video surveillance application, IPTV applications, in itsdecision in the future will play an important role in optical access network.Through this research, to the EPON technology as a transmission means to achieveUniversity WLAN coverage, both late video monitoring, fixed telephone access and othercomprehensive business, for a similar scene exploration construction model, unifiedconstruction scheme, investment saving and avoid repeated construction will have importantsignificance.This paper provided a practical case of using EPON technology in the construction ofwireless network and elaborated the advantages and disadvantages of it. It has realisticmeaning for promotion and application of EPON technology.
