With the appearance and development of the IOT (Internet of Things), it brings another wave of information industry. The sensor network is one important part of IOT. The sensors make the abstract things be concrete and digital and to exchange the information between persons and things or things and things. The contradiction becomes prominent between sensor network and transmission network with the increase of the sensors.IOT gateway plays an important role in the architecture of internet of things. We analyze the necessary function in theory, such as access capability, protocol conversion, management and control in this paper. In addition, we explain the structure of the gateway in detail including the connection between sensor network and transmission network and the system architecture of the gateway itself. The connection shows the relationship of the IOT gateway between transmission network and sensor network. The architecture describes the hierarchy of function and shows the conversion principle through each layer.Based on the problem and theoretical analysis above, we design a system of IOT gateway combined with the current communications technologies and embedded systems. It can access different types of devices and exchange data with transmission network in different ways. We chose ARM9 microprocessor as the core of the hardware system according applications and actual demand. We make the gateway hardware based on embedded hardware system design principle and transplant embedded ARM-Linux operation system on the hardware system. Then we connect different sensor devices and achieve temperature and humidity sensors and ZigBee wireless access node. In transmission technology, it achieve Ethernet and GSM message transport platform. Besides, we program the application software to realize the IOT gateway system. After that, the data can be transferred between sensor network and transmission network. At the end of this paper, we give some practical applications and give the corresponding data with different sensor devices.
