In modern times, the development of the intelligent grid goes faster and faster which directly led to the rising of the substation automation. Information collected by a variety of intelligent devices (such as microprocessor-based protection, etc.) is still a lack of effective and unified management. Monitoring for the information of relay protection, the analysis and management of protection actions have not reached the matching level compared with the level of the automation of system failure. In this case, the intelligent grid is referred to a very high position. So now, establishing an information management network of relay protection, categorizing, handling and appling the data needed by different departments by sector, providing the necessary analytical processing basis for accident are to be solved so as to comprehensively improve China’s power grid’s level of intelligence.The Fault Information System many manufacturers developed use the103/104standard. There are some inconvenient problems in the course which does not make us satisfied. In the scheduling master-side, functions in many systems such as Energy Management System (EMS), Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems are complex. The large amount of data and the lack of direct contact between systems greatly increase the complexity of the system architecture which makes a great amount of maintenance resulting in a serious waste of system resources. IEC61850standard adopted in this paper is the unified direction of the future substation communication standard. As the basis for transport protocol in seamless communication system, the IEC61850proposed allows system’s configuration management, information layering, mapping method and the specific network independent, object-oriented, data objects unified modeling, which consistent with the general direction of striving to create a seamless communication system with network transmission at the present stage. It makes no need to go through complex protocol conversion between intelligent devices interoperate.The paper points out the features and applications of IEC61850. Through the study of IEC61850standard, it analyzes the current situation of its engineering practice and explains the problems that exist in its application. Then it gets the standard modeling, creats the information model by combining, uses logical nodes to build a functional model, describs the modeling steps and gives IED configuration and device instance. Base on the above we establish the fault information systems based on the data center.
