The traditional manual survey of rock discontinuity is not only a heavy workload, effectiveness, time-consuming, but also it is often difficult and impossible to directaccess to rock faces, what’s more, field measurements are often carried out at the baseof existing tunneling or mining operations or along busy highways, safety risks areoften considerable. Laser scanning is a relative new surveying technique, it can beused as a cheaper, more objective and more precise and accurate method to identifydiscontinuity, it is also possible to reach rock faces up to several hundreds of metersaway from the operator, so that discontinuity properties of inaccessible spots can beobtained. This thesis presents a method to identify rock discontinuity using laser scanningdata. Firstly, a spherical projection strategy method is used to generate3D TIN, thestrategy is on the basis of the characteristic of one station terrestrial laser scanningpoint cloud. Secondly, a method is used to remove noise of vegetation and scanningempty and obstacles in the front of scanning object. Thirdly, a region growing methodbased on rock discontinuity properties is used to identify rock discontinuity. Fourthly,a method based on k-means kluster is used to automatic partition of the dominantgroup of the rock discontinuity, and then, do statistical analysis of the geometricparameters of discontinuity. In this thesis, a system named discontinuity identification is developed inMicrosoft Visual C++(release6.0) to achieve the above methods. In order to test andcalibration of the methods, a rock slope of jiudaohe in Fangshan district, Beijing, ahighway slope of Miaofengshan town Mentougou district and a granite quarry ofYanhecheng town Mentougou district are taken as examples, it is shown that thesystem has good practicality.
