As a new technique, three-dimensional laser scanning technique has been developed in recent years. This technique owned effective method of obtaining space data, and has a more and more important effect on a number of fields due to its quickness, precision and measure without contact. Development of science and technology impels expansion of new methods into every field. Traditional methods of geologic investigation expend time and manpower to some degree, and even involve security of people working in the field. Sometimes the results of the investigations are not satisfactory. It is theoretically and practically significant to apply three-dimensional laser scanning technique to the fields of geotechnical and geological engineering, as is an available supplement for traditional survey methods.(1) The paper first introduces internal and international research situations of measuring structural plane by photography and three-dimensional scanning. Classifies the hardware equipments of the laser scanning. Introduces the develop situation and main applications of three-dimensional laser scanning technique. Expounds the principle of operation and characteristics of this technique.(2)Put forward a method of combining artificial selection and computer color recognition to distinguish and measure single structural plane, based on colorful simulated rock cliff model obtained by three-dimensional laser scanning technique and digital camera. Analyses some main problems in the process of identifying, including conversion between geodetic coordinate and model coordinate; value range of threshold of color distance in color recognition. Completes the program of identifying structural planes computer assisting.(3)Researches and explores the full-automatic identifying rock structural planes combining image segmentation technique. Analyses the problems in the process, including: transform method from three-dimensional cloud data to image data; statistical method of preferred structural planes. Completes program of full-automatic identifying rock structural planes.Research results indicates that the rapidity, efficiency, high-accuracy, high-resolution characteristics of three-dimensional laser scanning technique are incomparable to traditional survey methods. Identifying rock structural planes based on three-dimensional cloud data is satisfactory both in rapidity and accuracy aspects.
