It is considered that current structure of power grid will be not suitable for the electricity demand in future. Even worse, it is too hard to meet the current consumption demand. A novel grid concept is urgently needed to solve various existing problems. Smart Grid is thought to be the intending direction of the power grid. It rapidly became a hot topic of the power industry and academic community as soon as it was put forth. Smart Grid integrates with various novel communication technology, Sensor Technology, automatic communication and information processing technology and so on. Among all, communication and information processing technology are thought to be the key technologies.In the construction of the smart grid, the communication system construction in the distribution network plays a very important role. This article contents two parts:the explorer to intelligent distribution network and the performance analysis to selection of WiMAX to the construct such a network.In the first part, an introduction is made to the communication contents and characteristics of the distribution network. Several typical distribution network business requirements and the status of the distribution network communication system is introducted. On this basis, the architecture of the intelligent grid is analysed, the model of a unified communications platform is given. In the disgussion, the communication transport layer on the unified communications platform is divided into three sub-layers, low voltage access layer, the pressure of the access layer and aggregation layer. And then the functional requirements of the communication system is analyzed. The communication system can not work without the appropriate communication technology support. Then comparative analysis of mentioned four communication technology is made, and integrated consideration of the intelligent distribution network communication system is also made starting from the demand and cost. WiMAX is chose as the medium pressure access layer communications technology.The second part mainly contents the performance analysis most of the main pressure access layer of WiMAX-based communications network, which reflects the QoS of the network performance. Firstly, the knowledge of the QoS and QoS mechanisms of WiMAX and IP Furthermore are introduced. Then a WiMAX network model is established and simulation analysis of the network configuration of each business is made with the help of OPNET14.5. The simulation is made mainly from the consideration of support of multi-service, QoS requirements assurance of multi-service under different network load, priority scheduling as well as cross-layer QoS design, and the simulation results show that the network has desired communication performance.
