Research On The Category Of College Students’Gifts For Lover And Its Relation With Intimate Relationship Satisfaction

Intimate relationship is a kind of important interpersonal relation. Scholars all over the world obtained a consensus of the importance of it. They researched the affecting factors on the relationship satisfaction, such as personal characteristics, attachment type, attribution style and behavior. In specific, the behavior included sharing life, self-disclosure and the way of solving conflicts. But they ignored the effect of the gifts. On the review of relevant literature about gifts, we found that the research mainly centered on the exchanging of gifts between villagers and ethnic minorities. But there weren’t studies about the gifts for lover although it happened frequently.Using self-made questionnaire on gifts for lover and intimate relationship satisfaction from the psychology perspective, this study investigated247collages in Southwest University systematically, there were conclusions following:1. Using open-ended questionnaire collecting the college students’gifts for lover, researcher classified the gifts according to certain standard. On the basis of the categories, researcher made questionnaire on the college students’gifts for lover. The result from factor analysis demonstrated that the college students’gifts for lover showed a two-factor implicit structure, named practical gifts of and symbolic gifts.2. The result from factor analysis demonstrated that self-made questionnaire on intimate relationship satisfaction of collage students consists of4demensions:promise, affectional support, interaction, respect and toleration. And the test result showed that the questionnaire has a good reliability and validity, met to the criterion of psychometrics.3. The investigation showed that when collage students send gifts, there are the following characteristics:comparing to practical gifts, they like to choose symbolic gifts for lover. Correspondingly, they like symbolic gifts more than pratical gifts. More lower the spending of living monthly, the more like the practical gifts. Comparing to the students who major in science and engineering, the students who major in arts prefer practical gifts. The more time of romantic relationship, the more like both practical gifts and symbolic gifts. The longer the love lasts, the more like both practical gifts and symbolic gifts.4. The degree of liking practical gifts has significant relationship with intimate relationship satisfaction. So do symbolic gifts. The result from regression demonstrated that symbolic gifts positively predict the intimate relationship of college students. Namely, intimate relationship satisfaction of college students mainly influenced by symbolic gifts.In a word, the innovations in the present research are as follows:The study brought the gifts for lover to field of research of gifts, exploring the implicit structure of the gifts for lover. The research also studied the relationship between the college students’ gifts for lover and the intimate relationship satisfaction. As the research methods, the research combined qualitative study and quantitative study to investigate the implicit structure of gifts for lover, made the questionnaire on college students’ gifts for lover, and fond the law of college students’gifts for lover.
