In recent years, college entrance examination which is regarded as the main way to be admitted into higher schools and take up occupations has gradually exerted greater and greater pressure on senior three students with the increasingly competitive society. The pressure of being admitted into higher schools is one problem that will be confronted by every senior three student in the preparation of college entrance examination. Surely, some appropriate pressure would possibly help them to keep away from indolence and accidie, arousing their potentiality and making them feel impassioned. However, too much stress would bring them discomfort both physically and mentally, thus would have an effect on their study efficiency and scores. The mental stress of senior three students is caused by various factors including the aspiration to accomplish personal achievements, the parents’ high hopes for their children and the society’s demand for high academic qualifications. All kinds of mock examinations make senior three students feel nervous and uneasy all the time and they dare not to have a little slackness in their studies. While they usually have heavy learning tasks, they have to endure tremendous pressure. Consequently, one task of great significance faced by parents, families and societies is how to relieve the pressure of the senior three students with favorable mentality and in positive ways. Case work, group work and community work have been put into practice at some degree and have received some successes with the development of social work. Among them, goup work regarded as the main way to release their pressure particularly possesses some practical value and practical effect because of its gregariousness,interestingness and complementariness.This essay can be divided into five parts. The first chapter makes an introduction of the background, the problems mainly concerned, the significance, the approaches and the ideas of the research. In the second chapter, the author makes a detailed literature review of the existed documents generally from three aspects including the mental stress, social work and group work. The third chapter does some specific surveys on the mental stress of senior three students before the college entrance examination in a high school in Lanzhou. The questionnaire divides the pressure sources of them into six parts containing the students themselves, families, schools, the competitive atmosphere, interpersonal relationships and peer pressure. It also refines these six parts to see which is the main pressure source that influences senior three students. The fourth chapter carries some concrete practices in releasing the mental stress of senior three students in the method of group work and makes an evaluation of the functions of it through the design, the implement and the assessment of the group work, at the same time pointing out some shortages of this group activity. The fifth chapter makes a summarization and discussion on the effectiveness of group work in relieving the mental pressure of senior three students.
