With the development of educational reforms and the publication of some policieson reduction of students’ study load, nowadays senior high school students have moreand more leisure time. Especially Five stringent regulations promulgated by JiangsuProvincial Education Department in May2009absolutely ensure senior high schoolstudents enough leisure time. As senior high school students have increasing leisuretime, there will be increasing possibility that leisure time can be used for students’personality development. But at the same time it will be an important problemworrying schools, families and society how we can guide students to manage theirleisure time efficiently. So how to guide students to make good use of their leisure timeand how to promote the healthy development of students both physically and mentallyin their leisure time need to be solved as soon as possible.By investigating and interviewing the teachers and the students of Jiangsu JiangyinSenior High School, especially making a questionnaire survey answered by200students from different grades and classes, the author found out the present managementleisure time situation of senior high students in four aspects. Firstly, it is about theamount of their leisure time belonging to the students.56.5%of the students think theyhave less than one hour’ leisure time when at school, while60%of the students believethey own more than three hours’ leisure time during the weekends. As for the summerand the winter vacations, enough free time can be spared. Secondly, about making thetime plan,75%of the students say they seldom or even never plan how to use theirleisure time, which suggests the students spend their leisure time in an unreasonableway. Thirdly, what the students mostly do in their leisure time are surfing online, sleeping and doing their homework, which are most popular with the students. Fourth, the students’ opinion on leisure activities differs from the parents’ and the teachers’. Thestudents think they use leisure time to kill the time and keep pleased physically andmentally, but most of the parents do the opposite and what they only wish is that theirchildren spend all of their leisure time on their studies. What’s more, it is surprising thatthe school and the teachers should make little requirement about the students’ leisuretime. Fifth, the students’ awareness of leisure time management is low, as they think theaim of spending leisure time is to relax themselves. Sixth, the students have little abilityof leisure time management as a result of their low awareness of leisure timemanagement. On the basis of the results of the investigation, the author analyses the causes of theexisting problems about leisure time management, finding out the four factors whichlead to the present situation:the students themselves; the school and the teachers; thefamilies; the community. In the last part of the study, effective measures are proposed. That is to say, the school acts as a vital role in students’ leisure time management andthe community should give correct guidance to the students, while the parents shouldcoach their children to manage their leisure time. At the same time, the studentsthemselves should have the confidence to develop their ability of manage their leisuretime.
