The study of English vocabulary has been considered as one of the basic elements ofEnglish learning, English teachers take vocabulary teaching as main works in teachinginevitably. The New English Curriculum Standards of Senior High School published in2003proposed specific requirements to the quantity of English vocabulary teaching and learning,as well as teaching methods and learning methods.During the implement of The New English Curriculum Standards, under the newrequirements of English vocabulary teaching, whether senior English teachers has made achange in teaching methods, whether the teachers teaching in accordance with the NewEnglish Curriculum Standards are the points concerned by most experts and scholars. Onaccounting of this point, this essay did a research and study on the current situation of seniorEnglish vocabulary teaching.By using questionnaires, classroom observation and literature analysis as the mainresearch ways, this essay did a detailed investigation on the current situation of senior Englishvocabulary teaching in Yantai. The investigation covered three aspects that are: teachers’attitudes towards English vocabulary teaching, the main English vocabulary teaching methodsused in senior high school and the students’ attitudes towards English vocabulary teaching.After analysis of the research, the writer found that there are some inadequacies asteachers didn’t try their best working in vocabulary teaching and the directions to students’vocabulary learning strategies are insufficient. To solve these problems, the writer presentedsome teaching advices hoping to get the maximum effectives in vocabulary teaching.Teachers should learn more theoretic knowledge of English vocabulary teaching and appliedthe theories into teaching practice; teaching reflections are needed while teaching and postteaching; teachers should pay attention to students’ vocabulary learning, give them effectivedirections on vocabulary learning methods and strategies.
