Vocabulary is one of the three elements of a language, and plays a foundational role inlanguage learning. The comprehensive language ability of students is influenced by thequantity and operational capability of their vocabulary. However, little effect has been gainedin English vocabulary learning, given the large amount of time and effort which has beeninvested. The New Curriculum Standards (2011) not only requires senior high school studentsto master a certain number of vocabularies, but also requires them to be able to applythe learned words. English learning is closely related to learning strategies, which is alsodemanded in the New Curriculum Standards and are divided into four aspects, namely,cognitive strategy, regulative strategy, communicative strategy and resourceful strategy. It ishelpful to increase the awareness and usage of strategies in English vocabulary learning andpossesses directive significance in it.There have been great achievements in the field of English learning strategy, includingthat in English vocabulary. Nevertheless, the subjects of the existing research are universitystudents or normal high school students, and the research for students specializing in sports insenior high schools is still in blank, which shows an overlook of this special group in such afield. While the current English vocabulary learning conditions of these students are weakfoundation, low interest, poor learning effect, and even self-sabotage, which severelyinfluence both their enrollment in the college entrance examination and their improvement ofthe comprehensive ability in language. Thus, it is necessary and meaningful to investigate theuse of English vocabulary learning strategy for students specializing in sports in senior highschools.The multiple intelligences theory advocates that each student has his or her ownunique intelligent structure. As a special group among senior high school students, the role ofstudents specializing in sports should not be underestimated in the learning and life of highschool as well as in the enrollment of the college entrance examination. According to theviews of language learning and students reflected in the multiple intelligences theory, affectedby their special intelligence, students specializing in sports show a unique character in the choice and use of English vocabulary learning strategies. Meanwhile, the success or failureattribution theory affects the learning effect of students in language learning, and helps a lot inchoosing more suitable learning strategies for more effective learning. Since studentsspecializing in sports experience more frustrations than normal senior high school students inEnglish vocabulary learning, and their success or failure attribution for the success and failureimpacts their choice and use of English vocabulary learning strategies to some extent.In view of the above situation, the author investigates the English vocabulary learningstrategies of students specializing in sports in senior high school from the perspective of theNew Curriculum Standards.136students specializing in sports from3senior high schools inLiaocheng are taken as the subjects. Based on the English vocabulary and learning strategiesrequirements of the New Curriculum Standards, the author recognizes their beliefs and theutilization of strategies in English vocabulary learning though questionnaire and interview,and analyzes the results from the multiple intelligences theory and the success or failureattribution theory.Based on the analysis and discussion, the author gets the current using situation of Englishvocabulary learning strategies for students specializing in sports and their demands forEnglish vocabulary learning strategy training. And from the views of language learning andstudents reflected in the multiple intelligences theory and the success or failure attributiontheory, the author obtains enlightenment for English vocabulary learning strategy training. Inthe end, the author reflects on the limitation of this investigation and proposes the futureresearch plan.
