Vocabulary is one of the cores of language abilities in communication. As the main means to manage vocabulary, vocabulary teaching is considered the most important.New English Curriculum Standards of Senior High School requires larger vocabulary and students' knowing of how to use vocabulary. Great and varying degree changes have taken place in English vocabulary teaching. This thesis based on the research conducted to investigate the current circumstances of vocabulary teaching in senior high schools in Shanghai, knowing the changes about vocabulary teaching from some aspects involving the selecting of vocabulary teaching strategies, and the using of vocabulary teaching methods, to discover whether and how English vocabulary teaching nowadays accord with New English Curriculum Standards.This thesis consists of three parts.Part one introduces the background, the purpose and contents of research, defines some concepts such as English vocabulary, vocabulary teaching and so on, focuses on the theoretical basis of the thesis and reviews the literature about English vocabulary teaching.Part two focuses on the research conducted to investigate the current circumstances of vocabulary teaching in senior high schools, and analyses four aspects involving the selecting of vocabulary teaching strategies; the using of vocabulary teaching methods; some problems as well as difficulties that may exist in vocabulary teaching; and the factors from English teachers.Part three briefly summarizes the whole thesis and proposes some pedagogical suggestions for future work i??cabulary teaching.
