As a compulsory course, Thematic Health Education plays an important role in newcurriculum standards of senior high school. However, in the new Sports and HealthCurriculum Standards, specific provisions and instructions have been deleted, andtherefore bring problems to P.E. teachers in the selection and implementation process. Thisstudy aims at investigating and analyzing the current situation in the selection of thecontents of thematic health education and students’ demands. The main methods used inthe research are documentation method, Delphi technique, questionnaires, andmathematical statistics. The subjects include teachers and students from10senior highschools in Taicang, Changshu, Wujiang, Changshu and Suzhou (including the New Districtand the Industrial Park). The research results are as follows:1. In most senior high schoolsof Suzhou, the selection of the contents of thematic health education is still weak. Schoolsvary in their attitudes towards the importance of health education. Short of full-time healtheducation teachers and insufficiency of classes are high on the list of the problems with thethematic health education. P.E. teachers are in bad need of health education knowledge butlacking in opportunities to receive relevant training.2. In order to cater to students’ needsand condense student-oriented contents into the18classes of high school health educationcourse, we must set up independent objective systems for health education. Owing to thelimit of the classes, teachers should select teaching materials which fit the mental andphysical characteristics of students, and set up an independent health education objectivesystem based on Sports and Health Curriculum Standards and2008Primary AndSecondary School Health Education Guidance.3. P.E. teachers should try to improve theirown proficiency level. With the implementation of health education and the change in thecontents of P.E. course, teachers should keep up-to-date information with the developmentof the change and improve traditional teaching methods.4. P.E. teachers should try toacquire knowledge, theories and methods about health education, improve their own proficiency level, master the skills in implementation of health education, and becomecompound teachers with both P.E. and health education knowledge.
