College Counselor is one of the most important parts of teacher team andadministration in university. They have the dual identity of both teachers andcadres. They are the front-line educators and organizers in giving ideologicaland political education to college students; they are the instructor and guideto the healthy development of college students; they are the major workforcein educational management of college students. With the reform of highereducation and the introduction of competition system in university, counselor’sjob is not the single political instruction but also the overall guidance as toideological and political education, management of daily affairs and giving tocollege students’suggestions on job opportunities, on psychology and livingservice. There is an annual rising trend in the academic level and number ofcollege counselors.College full-time counselors’instability and mobility has become amajor problem in the construction of college students’political and ideologicalworkforce, and become an important factor in affecting management and educationof college students. In order to meet the social development needs, topromote the comprehensive development of college counselors, to conduct aclear professional orientation to counselors, and to establish astable, professional, high-level counselors team, the college shouldestablish a whole and comprehensive series of counselor career planningsystem for the counselor to eliminate his burnout, establish a correctself-esteem, and locate a reasonable career position, with the purpose ofachieving sustainable development for individuals, university and society.In recent years, our country has pushed out the supporting documents for theconstruction of college counselor’s team and given more support to the collegecounselors’professional development. As college counselor has taken advantageof new development opportunities and meanwhile confronted with challenges, thecounselors team’s professional, specialized development trend has become the hot spots and trends of the college counselor team. Nowadays, however, this theoryof systematic and practical guidance has not been well formed. In this paper, wetake Qingdao University for example, through the analysis of survey data toexplore the career development status of college counselor,we have searchedon five major problems about college counselors’career development as follows:1. Their role and position are unclear and the low degree of specialization;2. They do not have good prospects and lack of support platform;3. They have low academic ability and poor theoretical instruction;4. They are working under great pressure with low payment;5. They have been highly assessed, but are unstable.In order to promote the college counselors’career planning and developmentrespectively by initiating the professional path of college counselors, thecollege counselors’self-knowledge, social recognition, the degree ofspecialization and so on should be enhanced. Based on our working experiences,we proposed the establishment of an open system by working and counselors’professional career supporting system. Furthermore, in order to help thecollege counselors with career planning and development, some theoretical supportand feasible references are provided.
