Modern Chinese Writer's Writing "southeast Asia"

From1920s-1950s many modern Chinese writers travelled to Southeast Asia with different purposes such as searching for occupations, politics or just travelling through Southeast Asia to other destinations. Writers utilized their life experiences to write literature about Southeast Asia in the forms of novel, prose, poem and drama. They are one stream of modern Chinese literature that uses foreign countries as backgrounds.The thesis expresses the analyzing aspect of foreign image in modern Chinese literature. The research objective is the literature of modern writers which reflects Southeast Asia during1911-1949. It is the first research that analyzes the image of Southeast Asia by the new Chinese writers systematically. Moreover, it employs theory and analyzing method of image of comparative literature and other research such as history. This thesis examines what made the modern Chinese writers express about Southeast Asia in different types of literature.The research is divided into three parts. The first part examines the relation between the modern Chinese writers and Southeast Asia such as the basic data of the Chinese people who emigrated to Southeast Asia, the reasons why the modern Chinese writers travelled to Southeast Asia, the writers’ life experience in Southeast Asia and their motivation to write about Southeast Asia. The second part is analyzing the structure of Southeast Asia written by modern Chinese writers. It consists of natural environment, multi-national culture society, the state of the society under the rule of the colony administration, characteristic of local peoples and overseas Chinese people in Southeast Asia. The last part is analyzing Chinese writers’ point of view and the restriction of writing about Southeast Asia.
