World Heritage is of outstanding value, which represents the most preciouscultural and natural legacy left by nature and humans. The resource is unique,non-renewable, and is significant for humanity. So we shall bear the responsibility toinherit and protect the World Heritage.Mount Huangshan was listed as world natural and cultural heritage on the WorldHeritage List in December1990and the first batch of World Geopark in February2004by the UNESCO. The unique natural landscape and rich cultural art works onMount Huangshan are all of great value. The rapid development of tourism industryin Huangshan has brought strong power to this area in recent years. Meanwhile itbrings some certain challenges to the management and conservation of MountHuangshan. So the sustainable development research of Huangshan World Heritagebecomes an important issue.Based on the method of comprehensive analysis of domestic and foreignresearch results, field investigation, qualitative description and quantitative analysis,etc, this thesis disscusses the distribution and value of the World Heritage resources inHuangshan. It summarises the achievement in the heritage conservation andmanagement, from the perspective of world heritage resource’s protection anddevelopment, and recognizes the importance of scientific and resonable protection tothe heritage development.The first and second chapter of this thesis give a discussion on the appearanceand intrinsic value of World Heritage, and the theory of sustainable development.Then it points out the importance of sustainable development of World Heritage.According to the results of fieldwork and the documents about Huangshan WorldHeritage site, the third chapter summaries the natural and geographical conditions,geological background, humanities and social environment of Mount Huangshan, andit also figures out the resources distribution and heritage value of Huangshan WorldHeritage. The fourth chapter compares Mount Huangshan with the other threedomestic World Cultural and Natural Heritage sites as well as some representativeforeign Natural and Cultural Heritage sites to analyze the strengths and weaknesses ofMount Huangshan in the heritage development and protection. The fifth chapter takes use of SWOT analysis and the tourism environmental capacity calculation and othermethods to analyze the protection and development status of Mount Huangshan. Atlast, the thesis concludes the problems and reasons of the sustainable development ofthe Huangshan World Heritage Site, and it figures out that we should limit newbuilding construction strictly, design better tourism lines, and integrate tourismresources around Mount Huangshan to achieve the goal of sustainable development ofMount Huangshan.
