A Study On Interpretation Strategies For Press Conference From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

In recent years, press conference, in which interpreters play an increasinglyimportant role in the exchange of information, has attracted more and more attentionsin public. Meanwhile, Primer Wen’s remarks at press conferences after the NationalPeople’s Conference (NPC) and Chinese People’s Consultative Conference (CCPCC)have been regarded as a classical material for interpretation in the terms of scale，leveland social influence. By taking the interpretations of Premier Wen’s remarks at pressconferences during the year from2003to2012as case study, this thesis discusses theinterpretation strategies at the press conference systematically, with the method ofexample analysis from the perspective of Skopos theory, in the hope that it will givesome inspirations to the interpreters.The introduction briefly describes the current research status about pressconference interpretation at home and abroad, the existing problems in this fieldedand the significance of this paper. There are three chapters in the main body. Chapter1summarizes features of the press conference. First, in the aspect of language, itincludes up-to-date topics, vocabulary with Chinese characteristic, the complicities ofaccents, irreversible process then, with respects to the audiences, it studies thedifferent types of audiences and their expectations for the interpreter. Last, from theposition of the requirements for an interpreter, it is discussed from the points ofattentive listening，an ability of handling pressure Chapter2explains the theoreticalframework of this paper, Skopos theory. Discussions include its background, threerules (Skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule), and its relevance of Skopostheory on press conference interpretation. Chapter3is a detailed discussion in light ofthe Skopos theory on the interpretation strategies for the press conference whichinclude literal interpretation, omitting words in duplicated logics, omitting words induplicated semantics, adding words without practical meaning for buffering, addingwords for explanation, adding words for connecting sentences, active adaptation,passive adaptation, various ways to change the expression, interpretations for special Chinese words, adjusting the order of words, and punctuation.
