Study On Press Conference Interpretation From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

With the further development of the trend of economy globalization, contact among countries and regions becomes closer and closer. China is increasingly integrated into this big family; China’s foreign affairs are promoted into a diverse level. Interpreting serving as a bridge between different languages is playing an increasingly important role and China needs more and more excellent interpreters. As an important bond of foreign exchanges, Government press conferences held during the NPC and the CPPCC in March every year provides a great platform for China and the rest of the world to deepen the understanding between each other. The quality of the press conference interpreting has a direct impact on the image of China and the acknowledgement of the world to China. The Skopos Theory takes translation as a purposeful human behavior that is to say translation is a kind of purposeful human action which determines the translation skill and strategy. As a specific form of interpreting, the purposes of Government press conference interpreting (GPCI for short) are different from other interpreting activities, such as, claiming our national policies and positions, protecting national interests, building government or personal images etc. It is the mutual consensus among Skopos Theory and government press conference interpreting.Therefore, this thesis took the consecutive interpreting from 2013 to 2014 as examples and made analysis of the GPCI and Skopos Theory comprehensively. The author found that the Skopos Theory could be applied in GPCI and conformed to the three major rules of the Skopos Theory, so as to summarize some interpreting skills and strategies on GPCI. The author divides the thesis into 5 parts; Chapter 1 includes the statue quo of GPCI, the purpose, significance and the layout of the thesis. Chapter 2 introduces the study of GPCI and Skopos Theory at home and abroad, in which the development of Skopos Theory, the definition of PCI and the features of PCI are introduced. Chapter 3 explains how the three principles of Skopos Theory which are the Skopos Rule, Coherence Rule, and Fidelity Rule are applied on GPCI. Chapter 4 is the core chapter in this thesis which includes the interpreting skills and strategies in GPCI, including literal interpretation, free translation, omission and amplification. The last chapter is the conclusion part including the summary and limitations of this thesis.
