Internal structure of the word is the main region of the word-formation studies. Thatis to say, words can be divided into the smallest linguistic unit—morpheme, and it refersto property, semantic, phonetic of the morphemes and how to combine them into newwords. There are many similarities and differences between word structures of English andof Chinese, but it is more meaningful to study the differences of them.To compare and contrast Chinese and English word-formation, it will lead to furtherunderstanding to the universality and specialty of the two languages word-formation andimprovement Chinese acquisition and Chinese teaching of the learns whose motherlanguage is not Chinese.As we know, the most effective method to learn Chinese is tocompare and contrast Chinese with English in a scientifically contrastive way andanalyses factors of difference.Under the guidance of the modem linguistic theory, thepaper makes a full and contrastive study on Chinese and English word-formation,especially on affixation,compounding,conversion and abbreviation.It mainly includesthe following:In the first chapter, it introduces the scope and signification of the paper, andanalyses Chinese lexics, English lexicology and the present situation of study at home andabroad.The second chapter mainly refers to characteristic of Chinese word-formation.MR.Ren Xueliang divides Chinese word-formation into four categories: affixation,compounding, tone-change, conversion.The third chapter mainly refers to characteristic of English word-formation.Affixation, compounding, shortening, conversion are the most high-producedword-formations of English. Besides, analogy and back-formation also areword-formations of English.In fourth chapter, we undertake an overall contrastive study of the mostword-formations between Chinese and English. One part is the similarity of the twoword-formations, which affected by the similarity of thought of word-formation and classic reasons. Other part is the differences of two languages‘word-formation, whichmainly includes common word-formation—affixation,compounding,conversion.The fifth chapter refers to the discussion of comparative and contrastive study ofChinese and English word-formation, supported by Language Transfer Theory, thatbenefits to Chinese teaching and learning.As we all know, systematic and theoreticalknowledge on comparative and contrastive study of Chinese and English word-formationis beneficial to utilization of positive transfer of language and avoidance of negative onein language learning and language teaching,it is also beneficial to the study on differentcultures and thinking ways....
