There are quantifiers both in Chinese and Japanese. The quantifiers in Japanese aremostly derived from the ancient Chinese. Quantifiers have played different roles in the twolanguages and the classifications of them are not completely the same. With the evolution ofthe languages, the meanings of the quantifiers in the two distinctive languages as well as theirrespective usages are more or less changed in one way or another. Therefore, it is necessarythat a comparative analysis should be conducted between the quantifiers in Japanese andthose in Chinese. And it is also of great significance in promoting the scientific andsystematic teaching of quantifiers in the two language systems.Altogether, there are142quantifiers which have been covered in “The Syllabus forTeaching Chinese among the Overseas Students in Higher Education Institutions”(for longterm training). They can roughly be divided into three groups in terms of the comparativeanalysis of their meanings and usages in the two distinctive languages: the quantifiers of theidentical meanings and usages basically, the quantifiers of the identical meanings and usagespartially, and the quantifiers of distinctive meanings and usages. Moreover, it is found thatthere are some differences in the two distinctive language systems in terms of the formats ofthe quantifier structure and the quantifiers in Japanese are lack of independence and they canbe barely used independently through the analysis of “the noun+quantifier structure”,“theverb+quantifier structure”, the omissions of qualifiers in the two distinctive languages, theoverlapping of quantifiers. The unique phenomenon of overlapping quantifiers exists in eitherof the two language systems, but the quantifiers differ from each other in terms of theiroverlapping competence and the formats.The comparative analysis of the quantifiers in the two distinctive language system isintended to better serve the teaching of quantifiers in Chinese among the Japanese learners.At present, the published textbooks on teaching Chinese quantifiers for the foreign learnersare focused on the explanation of the syntactical structure of quantifiers, which are far fromsystematic and targeted. Through the analysis of the students’ errors in the course of acquiringof Japanese quantifiers in the HSK Composition Corpus, the existing problems in the courseof quantifier acquisition can be recognized and identified so that the targeted pedagogicalstrategies can be developed. Teachers should clearly know about the similarities and thedifferences between the quantifiers in Chinese and those in Japanese before planning theteaching content. Only in this way, can the teaching efficiency be improved effectively.
