With the development of international communication, English, serving as an internationally accepted language, exhibits its significance in international communication. In China, the spread of English education contributes to the increase of English learners and the development of their English proficiency. However, most of the Chinese English learners learn English in a Chinese-speaking environment. It hinders their improvement in oral English communication greatly, since they are lack of access to English-speaking interlocutors. However, some speakers, by employing communication strategies, can still communicate efficiently in English when faced with difficulties in their conversationThe thesis chooses the famous talk show program, Yang Lan One on One, as its research subject. Sixteen sample interviews, including eight in English and eight in Chinese, are studied thoroughly through observation and note-taking. Yang’s adoptions of communication strategies are analyzed, and the frequencies of the adoptions are presented with explanations. By comparing the adoptions of communication strategies by Yang Lan in her first and second languages, the thesis discusses the similarities and differences between the use of the communication strategies in both languages. Suggestions for a better foreign language communication are provided based on the findings.The author hopes that the thesis is conducive to the readers’improvement of not only native language communication but also foreign language communication. The thesis hopes to accommodate its readers to learn about communication strategies, to realize the importance of the strategies, then to arouse their awareness towards the employment of the strategies to deal with difficulties in communication.
