With the rapid development of globalization, mass communication is becoming one of the most important channels of international communication. Talk show programs which aim at intercultural communication undertake the obligation of conveying cultural information. Compared with general talk show programs, intercultural talk show programs are based on a special mode in which the host and guest: with source cultural background communicate with each other by using target language to convey source cultural information to the target audiences.This study aims to explore a preliminary research on the translation of TV talk show program from a communicative perspective. By analyzing Up Close whose purpose is to achieve an intercultural communication, the author finds that the translators adopt the approach of "auto-translation" to solve the problems. The author then analyzes the formulation, purpose, advantages and foreground of auto-translation.The study focuses on two aspects to analyze the auto-translation in Up Close. One is theoretical description of auto-translation from communicative perspective, and the other one is practical study of conversations selected from Up Close. The author firstly studies the definition and types of talk show program and explains the applicability of communication theory to auto-translation. Secondly, the process of auto-translation, the role of auto-translator and the target of auto-translation have been analyzed on the foundation of communication theory. And thirdly, on the basis of collected data, the approaches of translating cultural words and proverbs have been explored. Hence, a conclusion has been drawn that there are usually two strategies applied in auto-translation with different audience-orientation: domestication and foreignization. By analyzing the selected data, the author finds out that auto-translation is one of the effective approaches in translation of TV talk show program which aims to make an intercultural communication. The research also indicates from a communicative perspective that the host and guest(s) in a talk show program play the role of information communicators and the purpose of auto-translation in Up Close is to achieve a successful intercultural communication.
