You Fengwei is a unique author in Chinese contemporary literature.“MiseryNarration” has been his prominent theme in his fiction writing over more thanthirty years. This stems from his strong conscious of suffering and sense ofresponsibility. In many of his fiction which takes significant social history asbackground, he attempts to present the situation of Chinese people’s deep sufferingin a comprehensive way. This situation of suffering is mainly manifested in twoaspects: one is common people’s suffering in history and real life; the other is life’sparadox and pains that the intellectuals face in the great social changes. Whilethere is grim landscape of suffering in You’s fiction, his narration is filled withemotional force which contains some warmth. This warmth always lurks in hisworks, be it rural society or modern city, the pain of life or the helplessness ofsurvival. This aesthetic effect is mainly demonstrated through his narrative strategyof restoring the “realness” and constructive technique of romanticizing charactersin his works. Meanwhile, You’s literature creation also reflects his affectionatecompassion towards the public and strong humanitarian feelings.
