The Influence Of Handwriting Style On Writer Identification: Evidence From The Eye Movement Of Research

Handwriting identification is cognitive psychology visual perception andpattern recognition of popular research fields. Handwriting style is one of theimportant factors which influence handwriting identification. Because thestability of handwriting style is in the same writer and the differences ofhandwriting style among different writers is significant, both of which maydetermine the process of handwriting identification in certain extent. Therefore,with the discussion of the eye movement regular pattern in handwritingidentification which is in condition of same language and with the discussion ofthe possibility of handwriting identification which is in condition of acrosslanguages, this present study designs for two parts of empirical experiments toanalyze the influence of handwriting style on the handwriting identification,especially in the eye movement index. We expect that the present study canunderstand more about the process of handwriting identification in the visualperception processing and provide the theory basis for handwriting identificationand provide the practice basis for handwriting identification in patternrecognition. In the present study, by screening and assessing, we choose three types ofhandwriting in different handwriting styles as eye movement experimentalmaterial. Two experiments were conducted in the present study. In experiment1,there were41particulars volunteered to take part in the eye movement task ofhandwriting identification which is in condition of same language. In experiment2, there were47particulars took part in the eye movement task of handwritingidentification which is in condition of cross language. Both of experiments useconventional behavior indexes and regular eye movement indicators for datacollection. There are respectively RT, accuracy, mean fixation duration, meanfixation duration, fixation count, saccade count, visited interest areas count, etc.We analyze the data with T test, ANOVA analysis, etc.Results are as follows:1. According to the behavior indexes’data of experiment1and experiment2,we find that handwriting style affect the process of handwriting identification.What we can see that with the consistency of handwriting style is higher, the RTof identification is longer; the accuracy of identification is lower; especially, theinfluence trend is more significant in handwriting identification which is incondition of same language;2. According to the eye movement indicators’ data of experiment1, theinfluence of handwriting style on handwriting identification mainly reflects onmean fixation duration, fixation count, saccade count, visited interest areas count,IA%. All indicate that with the improvement of handwriting style’ consistency,handwriting identification task needs more fixations, more saccades, more spanof saccade and the area to watch more clarity;3. According to the eye movement indicators’ data of experiment2, theinfluence of handwriting style on handwriting identification is not significant inoverall eye movement indexes, but in IA count and IA%, the local eye movement indexes inflect that more consistency in handwriting style, more effect fixation inlocal of handwriting, which results are the same with experiment1;4. Compare handwriting identification in cross-language task with handwrit-ing identification in same language task, we find that more consistency inhandwriting style, more significant between two tasks in difference of RT andaccuracy; in the eye movement index, only show that in difference of fixationcount, the rest of the eye movement indexes showed no significant differences.Conclusions are following:1.Chinese handwriting identification belong to imagine identification;2.Whether handwriting identification in the same language task orhandwriting identification in cross-language task，depend on whole handwritingstyle;3. Handwriting identification in cross-language task has feasibility;4. In the precondition of handwriting style being exist, handwritingidentification can adopt recognition strategy which is similar with imagineidentification, namely that is preferential access to the difference of handwritingstyle to identify different writers’ handwriting. When handwriting style is obvious,the process of handwriting identification is trend to local processing, such as theprocessing for strokes of handwriting character increases;5. In the precondition that handwriting identification depends on wholehandwriting style, compare handwriting identification in cross-language task withhandwriting identification in same language task, the degree of handwritingprocess or the information of getting from handwriting does not exist with largedifference.
