ObjectivesTo understand the status quo and developing trend of the Traditional ChineseMedicine(TCM) treatment for ulcerative colitis(UC) from2002to2012, and toprovide a train of thought and basis for the further treatment of UC. To understand thequality, safety, and clinical efficacy of TCM treatment on UC in published reports byevaluating and summarizing clinical research literatures. Besides,to provide evidencefor TMC and integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine for clinical decision.Methods1. The literatures of TCM for the treatment of UC from the Chinese JournalFull-text Database(CJFD) has been retrieved and analyzed by bibliometric method.Current picture of research in this field has been obtained through statistical analysisin the aspects of publishing year, periodical distribution, regional distribution.2. The literatures of TCM for the treatment of UC from the Chinese JournalFull-text Database, the China Doctor Dissertation Full-text Database(CDFD) and theChina Master’s Theses Full-text Database(CMFD)has been retrieved and analyzed.211articles on clinical research has been selected and then further analyzed, so as toknow the general situation, standard of diagnosis, inclusion and exclusion criteria, treatment in clinical research.33articles from CDFD and CMFD have been graded byJadad method with the random sequence generation method literature.10out of the33documents3points above have been Meta-analysis.Results1. Four hundred and thirty eight articles from CJFD met the inclusion andexclusion criteria were bibliometric analysed.(1)Literature yearly distribution: thenumber of TCM the articles on UC remained roughly steady from2002to2010, rapidgrow in2011.(2)Literature periodical distribution:438TCM articles on UC werepublished in127journals.30journals published5and above literature, account for7.87%of the set text journals top10journals, a total of133Papers, account for30.37%of the total amount of the literature.(3)Literature geographical distributionand the number of organization’s articles:438TCM articles on UC were counted by the province of organization with which first author worked,438documents werefinished by authors from32provinces. According to the province published number, the top12provinces and cities are Henan, Jiangsu, Shandong, Guangdong, Beijing,Sichuan, Yunnan, Tianjin, Zhejiang, Shanxi, Shanxi and Heilongjiang by theorganization with which the first author worked, we got a number of322, those with5or more articles were Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and itsaffiliated hospitals, Henan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and itsaffiliated hospitals, Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and itsaffiliated hospitals, Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and itsaffiliated hospitals, Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and itsaffiliated hospitals, Anhui Medical College and its affiliated hospitals, HeilongjiangUniversity of Traditional Chinese Medicine and its affiliated hospitals, LiaoningUniversity of Traditional Chinese Medicine and its affiliated hospitals, ShandongUniversity of Traditional Chinese Medicine and its affiliated hospitals, ShanxiCollege of Traditional Chinese Medicine and its affiliated hospitals, Capital MedicalUniversity and its affiliated hospitals, China Academy of Traditional ChineseMedicine and its affiliated hospitals.(4)Literature type distribution: literature researchfocused on the clinical studies (178,40.64%), followed by theoretical articles (84,19.18%), clinical experience (64,14.61%), review articles (28,6.39%).(5)Fundsupported articles:19(0.43%) is a funded project,8(1.83%) were form the NationalFund project.2. Bibliometric analysis on treatment of UC by TCM of the211clinical researchdocuments:(1)178clinical studies from CJFD, there were8on randomized trial (Theauthors noted that the sequence generation methods, such as random number table ora computer-generated random number).26(14.6%) were with TCM and Westernmedicine diagnostic criteria.18(10.1%) were only with TCM diagnostic criteria,40(22.5%)were only with Western medicine diagnostic criteria.12(6.7%) were withbringing in and ruling out standard,2(1.1%) were with bringing in standard,1(0.6%)were with ruling out standard.TCM treatment for UC were mainly herbaltherapy, enema therapy or both.(2) All of the clinical research documents from CDFDand CMFD were with TCM and Western medicine diagnostic criteria, bringing in and ruling out standard. TCM treatment for UC were mainly herbal therapy, enematherapy or both and so on. Meta-analysis: herbal therapy on UC were moresignificantly effective than the control group (P<0.00001), the sensitivity analysisshowed that the overall efficacy of TCM for UC was stable, funnel plot weresymmetry, suggesting that there may be less bias.ConclusionsChinese clinical and scientific research professionals have done a lot on TCM forthe treatment of UC from2002to2012, and have published an extensive literature in2011, the disease having been paid more and more attention to clinicians andresearchers. About7.78%journals published30.37%articles on UC, with whichindicated is the relative concentration of the published literature. Meta-analysis resultsshow that the medicine in the treatment of UC in the overall efficacy is better than thecontrol group. The research brought into the literature belong to high quality literature,so the reliability of the results is better. The funnel plot is symmetrical, but notcompletely symmetrical also indicates that although the existence of these publishedthesis bias is small, but there are still some bias. So in the present we can’t get aauthoritative conclusion of the Chinese medicine treatment on UC and we still needmore multi-center, large sample, random controlled clinical results to demonstrate it.
