Irritable bowel syndrome (ISB) is one of the common and difficult diseases, and a kind of the biological, psychological and social disease. At present, there is no effective treatment method in modern medicine. Recently, however, the treatment of Chinese medicine is being concerned gradually with its increasingly important advantages, especially in international exchange. Objectives:This study was designed to observe the curative effect of soothing-liver-and-strengthening-spleen method, using Tong Xie Yao Fang and Cen Ling Bai Zhu San Modified for ISB (liver constraint and spleen insufficient syndrome) patients from China and Vietnam, and to offer effective theories, methods, prescriptions, medicine, and evaluation indicators for clinical treatment on ISB.Methods:This study was a contrast experiment with60cases diagnosed with ISB (liver constraint and spleen insufficient syndrome) in China (Nanjing, Jiangsu Provincial Hospital) and Vietnam (Hanoi, Benh Vien y Hoc co Truyen Dan Toc). These subjects were divided randomly into treatment groups, including Chinese treatment group (15cases) and Vietnam treatment group (15cases), and control groups, including Chinese control group (15cases) and Vietnam control group (15cases).With the soothing-liver-and-strengthening-spleen method, the patients of treatment groups were prescribed with Tong Xie Yao Fang and Cen Ling Bai Zhu San Modified, twice a day before breakfast and dinner, and50mg horse d bromine ammonium, thrice a day. The control groups were only prescribed with50mg horse d bromine ammonium, thrice a day. Both groups took3courses with30days each. Results:As for the effect evaluation, in the treatment groups of30cases,1patient was cured, accounting for3.3%. There were12cases of apparent effect, making up40.0%, and17cases of effect.0case was invalid, with a total effect rate of100%. In the control group of30cases, there was no case of recovery (0%).2cases were of apparent effect and23cases were of effect, with an apparent-effect rate of6.7%and total effect rate of83.3%. There were still5cases of no effect.Distinct difference of total effect-rate was found between the treatment groups and the control groups, and no distinct difference was found between Chinese groups and Vietnam groups before treatment, while Vietnam group had better effect than Chinese groups, especially in2months. No any adverse reaction was found in all processes. Conclusions:Soothing-liver-and-strengthening-spleen method can improve life quality clinical symptoms of patients of ISB (liver constraint and spleen insufficient syndrome). The best effect is in the second month. Vietnam patients had more sensitivity to Chinese medicine than Chinese patients.
