Objective:To investigate the situation of job burnout,coping style and defense style ofmedical workers with different demographic characteristic and explore the correlationbetween them,in order to provide evidences for medical managers to take correspondingmeasures for preventing and reducing job burnout of medical workers,so as to maitain theirphysical and mental health and improve the quality of their work.Methods:The Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey(MBI-GS),Trait Coping StyleQuistionnaire(TCSQ) and Defense Style Questionnaire (DSQ) were distributed to487medical workers in a model hospital.Data processing was with SPSS18.0,and t-test,One WayAnova and Pearson Correlation analysis were chosen as statistical methods.Results:(1)The overall detection rate of job burnout from medical workers was19.67%,andthe highest detection rate was from the dimension of Diminished Personal Accomplishmentwhich was11.39%,then were the dimension of Emotional Exhaustion(7.04%) andDepersonalization (5.18%).The scores of the three dimensions of job burnout weresignificantly lower than the Maslach norm(p<0.01).Through the statistical analysis of jobburnout among medical workers with different demographic factors,we found that there weresignificant differences between factors of sexuality,age,marital status,workingtenure,birthhistory and family formation(p<0.05).(2)72.05%of the medical workers tendedto use positive coping style, and25.26%used the negative one instead.The scores of positiveand negative coping style were both significantly higher than the national norm(p<0.01).Through the statistical analysis of coping style among medical workers with differentdemographic factors,we found that there were significant differences between factors ofsexuality,age,marital status and educational leval.(p<0.05).(3)Most of the medical workertended to use mature defense style(72.05%),there were14.08%used immature defense styleand12.22%used intermediate defense style,it proved that medical workers had a high level ofmaturity on defense style. Through the statistical analysis of defense style among medicalworkers with different demographic factors,we found that there were significant differencesbetween factors of sexuality,age and educational leval.(p<0.05).(4)There was a positivecorrelation among negative coping style, immature defense style and job burnot in medicalworkers(p<0.01),but a positive correlation had been found among positive copingstyle,mature defense style and job burnout(p<0.01).In the factor of coping style,the scores of medical workers who suffered burnout were significantly lower than the ones who didn’t onpositive coping style and coping tendency(p<0.05),but significantly higher on negativecoping style(p<0.01).In the factor of defense style, the scores of medical workers whosuffered burnout were significantly higher than the ones who didn’t on immature defensestyle(p<0.05),and significantly lower on mature defense style(p<0.05),but no significantdifferences had been found between them on intermediate defense style and concealment(p>0.05).Conclusion:Medical workers had some degree of job burnout.Most medical workers usedpositive coping style and mature defense style,which proved that they had a high level ofmaturity on their coping and defense style.Job burnout of medical workers was closely relatedto their coping style and defense style,the ones who suffered burnout tended to choosenegative coping style and immature defense style rather than positive coping style and maturedefense style.Therefore, one’s choice of coping style and defense style can affect and predictthe occurence and development of job burnout.Choosing positive coping styles and maturedefense style can effectively reduce the incidence of job burnout,and choosing the negativecoping style and immature defense style can probably lead to burnout.Besides, according tothe differences among job burnout,coping style and defense style of medical workers withdifferent demographic characteristic (sex,age,marital status,educational levals,working tenure,birthhistory and family formation),we could take nichetargeting intervening measures toprevent and reduce their job burnout and improve their physical and psychological healthlevel.
