[Objective] Using a general clinical analysis combines with modern computer technology and data mining system, we organized the clinical cases of insomnia by Professor Zhou Zhongying, the contemporary master of Chinese medicine, and further study his clinical experiences and outstanding knowledgeable mind. In sum, this thesis is able to act as a preference to show how to inherit the clinical experiences from a skilled Chinese medicine doctor.and to improve the Chinese medicine’s theoretical understanding and application of insomnia, and to mangnify its clinical effect on insomnia for wider clinical applications.[Methods] With the help of Porfessor Zhou’s outpatient case system, we include all the clinical cases by Professor Zhou from2003to2009. Of all the cases,192cases with389follow-up can be fitted into the standard patient cataloge. Through the SQL-Server2005sofeware, we build a data analysis platform with a varity of methods ranging from associate rules, ka-fang test, multi-layered data derivation, analysis the association between kernel formulas, symtoms, etiology and herbs, in the end, we further distingulish, diviation and summery the data mining result.[Result] After we analyze the192cases, we come up with the result that Professor Zhou, focus on the interactions between the disease area and internal organs such as heart, liver, kidney, spleen and stomach, and divides the causes of insomnia into two groups:heart-liver-kidney system and spleen-stomach system. These two systems can act on each other and, influenced by the imbanlance of yin and yang, will dissolve into nine kinds of etiologies:deficiency, fire, heat, despondence, damp, phleme, stasis, cold and wind. Professor Zhou emphasizes the pathological transfer between deficiency and fire in the onset and development of insomnia. Based on the direct and indirect relationships between symptoms, pathogenesis and medicine, data gathering and general clinical analysis, we conduct deeper disscussion and work out its core prescription: shuzaoren, chuanxiong, zhimu, xiakucao, danshen, yejiaoteng, huanglian, and banxia. And by means of of cluster analysis and pathological analysis, we find out the five main herbal ingredient groups:zhenzhumu, longgu, dangshen, muli, yuanzhi, shichangpu, and fuling; shengdihuang, taizishen, huanglian, rougui, wuweizi, maidong, and danshen; huangqi, dangshen, baizhu, fuling, and danggui; chenpi, fabanxia, fuling, zhike, zhuru, and huanglian; chaihu, xiakucao, danpi, chishao, zhizi, and huanglian.[Conclusion]①Insomnia has nine pathological factors:deficiency, fire, heat, despondence, damp, phlegme, stasis, wind and cold, with deficiency and heat standing out the most often.②Organ systems responsible for insomnia are heart-liver-kidney system and spleen-stomach system.③Insomnia has six most common etiologies:Yang failing to relate with Yin; imbalance between heart-yang and kidney-yin; hyperactivity of heart-liver fire; endoretention of damp heat; deficiency in kidney and fire in liver;stagnation of liver-QI and the overtaxing of mind.④To cure insomnia, Professor Zhou’s preferred certern medical herbs such as shuzaoren, chuanxiong, zhimu, xiakucao, danshen, yejiaoteng, huanglian and banxia, and his preferred prescription formulas are suanzaorentang, jiaotanwan, anshendingzhiwan and huanglianwendantang.
