As a method to remind people of a famous person or events, memorial landscape has a very long history. From the start of Primitive Art and Religious Art, memorial place always brought human psychological a sense of seriousness, tension, Permanence and constriction. Manifestations on the design, it is the unaltered axis mode of space. Until the Roosevelt Memorial designed by Lawrence Halprin after world war, contemporary memorial landscape design gradually shows a closer attention to the context of the site, through the design to express the backstories of event and the experience and feelings of visitors in the place of memorial landscape.This thesis starts from the relation between memorial landscape and place theory, through the influence factors in site, design to express the event and place experience-making to make the transform from site to place. And then make a comparison between Roosevelt Memorial and Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park to analysis how the designers to make the conversion from the general site into a place of memorial atmosphere landscape when faces the different site context. In the end, hope this place-making analysis of contemporary western memorial landscape design, may bring a revelation for our country’s memorial landscape design.
