Since the 1980s,there has been a veritable "Holocaust and Jewish museum boom" with the establishment around the world,and hundreds of museums and institutions dedicated to remembering and telling the history.Compared with other cities,the memorial theme of Berlin is more inclined to reflect on the history of Nazi Germany's destruction of the European Jews during the World Warâ…¡,which has soaked into the construction of urban space.And the international design competitions held by Berlin government have attracted a lot of famous architects to attend in around the world,as well as many excellent projects have presented.The architects also showed very profound understandings of the site when they facing the variety situations,and developed their own strategies to deal with them.This dissertation is taken the urban memorial space as a carder,according to the different levels of relationship with the memorial theme and classifies them into three types:the direct-related,the indirect- related,and the unrelated,and chosen three cases in Berlin:the Topography of Terror,the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and Berlin Jewish Museum as examples.The research starts from the texture of the urban development,analyses the factors behind them.Then from the aspect of design,it explores the strategies how the architects deal with the site,by intervening of architecture,exploring the potential of the site and stimulating the sense of the place to meet the memorial theme.Finally,by analyzing the close relationship of these three projects to convey their comprehensive meanings to the urban redevelopment of the city centre.As to the masse and quick design process in China nowadays,which has no deep respect to the original site,this dissertation shows some critical ideas on it.And it also give some thinkings on the reconstruction of Tilanqiao in Hongkong district for the Jewish Refugees during the WWâ…¡in Shanghai.
