Research On Memorial Landscape Design In The Theory Of Place And Imagery

Memorial landscape acts as the carrier of space activities with social meanings. It is the reliance of humans’ history sentiments. The combination of people’s feelings and social activities implements the uniqueness of place images from memorial landscape. With the dual presences of history and reality, the memorial landscape offers people a place to sense the past and reflect the present.During the last half century, the theory about Place and Image in the field of urban design has gone through its childhood and ended in plenty of mature and thoughtful achievements. Also, the theory of landscape design is more and more affected by the theory of phenomenology and human geography, as well as the attributes and connotation of landscape culture are getting growing emphasis. Moreover, the researches about memorial landscape provide a new platform for the theory of landscape design. Therefore, rather than limited to the field of urban design or architecture, the theory about Place and Image contributes an entry point to the study of memorial landscape.This paper goes through the explanation and organization of related theories such as Place and Image, and builds the connection between theories with memorial landscape. First, the paper will generalize the theoretical foundations for memorial landscape, based on the illustration of Place and Image. Second, the paper will analyze the translation process from design to feeling when an architect designs a memorial landscape, and conclude the design methods of the landscape under theory instructions. Third, the paper will explore the imageability and implementation methods of this specific memorial landscape.This paper hopes to analyze and explore the memorial landscape with the guidance of Place theory and Image theory, and provides a reference to the new analysis mode. The paper facilitates the research conclusion through the case study of well‐known memorial landscapes and the induction of the theory, as well as the generalization of atmosphere building methods from some main landscapes. Besides, this paper enriches the theory about place and image, and the evidential materials of memorial landscapes, so as to offer a reference for the evaluation of image of memorial landscape space.
