With the rapid economy-development and continuous urban-expansion of Beijing havebring some impact to the historical environment and traditional building style of the old townof Beijing as the urban construction going. In response to this situation,the idea of "protectingthe old town of Beijing as a whole" has been put forward and improve gradually. With theestablishment of conservation districts of historic sites, the old town of Beijing has beenprotected from more damage. However, there are many historical Hutong outside theconservation districts but negleced, which does not coordinate with the conception of"protecting the old town of Beijing as a whole".Basing on methods of "classified protection "and "active improvement", the papercarried on investigation and data collection of Hutong outside conservation districts,thensummed up the problems and compared the differences between the inside and outside of theconservation districts, clarified the importance of the protection of Hutong outsideconservation districts. On the basis of investigation, the paper classified Hutong by gradingand explored requirements of protection and improvement of all types,through quantifying thevalue of Hutong. In the research of strategy of Hutong design,the paper highlighted theflexible guidance, protected historical buildings, coordinated spatial relationship of new andold buildings, improve the inadequates, and guide the update and development of theseHutong.
