The occupation of private cars in China grows rapidly which has not onlychanged the city’s traffic structure, also changed people’s daily life. As an importantcarrier of urban living, traffic planning in residential area needs to be reconsidered ina systematic way to respond to this change. The planning protocol of most present residential area was worked out during thewalking age, which is difficult to meet current and future traffic demand. The relevantrules and index needs to be revised. As a basic unit, the residential traffic system isthe begin and end of urban transportation system. This article uses the theory ofsupply and demand balance to analyze the problem of residential traffic system, summarize the essence of residential traffic characteristics and discuss the standard oftraffic design. The conclusion includes the recommendations for improvement and anindex system for residential design and evaluation. In view of supply and demand perspective, this article analysis the correspondingproblem of residential traffic on the following aspects: the congestion of the entrances, the inappropriate structure and density of road network, the serious confliction ofmotorized and non-motorized transportation, and the confusion of vehicle parking. These problems could be solved by both design and management tools. By reducingthe scale, enhancing road network density, selecting the reasonable network structureand parking layout mode, the residential traffic system can be improved into anorderly linkage one.The Innovations of this paper is to give a derivation method of some importantparameter which is indispensable in design process. The parameter system isconstituted by the district scale, road network density and parking index. This inference process can be used to solve specific problems in differentcircumstances.
