With China’s rapid growth in vehicle population, the number of urban transportproblems is increasing. So in our country, the development of intelligent transportationsystem is imperative. Traffic signal control system is an important component of theintelligent transportation system, the intersection traffic signal control is critical in urbanroads, because the intersection traffic flow at different times is complex and uncertain,fixed time control methods, often causing a waste of time in efficient use of road, thephenomenon of waiting in vain makes the road impeded. Moreover, the designrequirements of different intersection traffic signal control system are vary widely, thetraditional way of using ASIC to customized production not only is expensive, but alsoneed long development cycle,and can not to develop products quickly for the market.For this kind of problems, the project choses the Cyclone II FPGA family’sEP2C8Q208C8chip of Altera as the core for realization of a realtime traffic light controlsystem’s hardware. First, in the system’s design of the hardware circuit, a solution of realtimeallocation of time is proposed for the problem of timing of intersection’s traffic control signals,by measuring the information of waiting vehicles and combining traffic signals’ effectiveduration, the system can complete realtime control of the traffic signal; Then a design ofpassword lock module provides a reliable way for the problem of closing the branch roadsafely in case of emergency,by using this module, the system can close the branch road toensure the traffic backbone network of the city unimpeded after the traffic managementinputing password to change the system’s work mode.This project proposes a specific implementation of a realtime traffic light control systembased on FPGA,by using FPGA’s advantages,such as lower power consumption, highreliability and shorter development cycle. It realizes the functions of coordinating the waitingtime between main road and branch road adaptively,which is suitable for traffic control ofintersections,and closing branch road safely during emergency. It has a great significance ofimproving the transit capacity of intersections in the urban traffic net.
