Study On The HabitationUnitDesign Of The Establishment For The Elder InSouth Of Fujian

With the increase of elderly population in China, nowadays the aging problembecomes more serious than ever. Since1999, China has entered the aging society. Inrecent years, the country has paid more attention to the aging problem. Even theGovernment stated clearly in the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” to respond actively to theaging problem. According to the plan, a mechanism will be established to providenursing service based on home-based care supported by nursery community andpension agency for the aged. However the nursing facilities that are designed for theaged to their characteristics and demand have not been fully-developed. They are sorare. Moreover, the living environment for elderly people is not comfortable, whichattracts increasing attention from researchers.Residential unit is the most important part of the nursing facilities for the old asthey spend most of time in this unit. Thus, whether the building design is appropriateis straightly related to the quality of their life in later years.The study firstly introduces the current situation and development of facilities forthe aged at home and abroad, followed by case studies and a field research on thesefacilities in Southern Fujian and Taiwan. Then, Data analysis based on thequestionnaire is dealt with to show the present situation and existing problemsconcerning the living facilities for the elder. It also adopts a series of theoriesincluding Human engineering, physiology, psychology, gerontology of the elderly toanalyze their characteristics and needs in physiology and psychology. More important,this study offers some key points in designing residential units in perspectives ofinterface such as floors, walls and ceilings，the selection and layout of facilities withineach residential unit as well as safety design features, which ensures a safe andcomfortable living environment for the elder. It is hoped that this research will be helpful to the construction of facilities for theaged in Southern Fujian in the future, and will be contributive to the development offacilities for them in China.
